The Skyscraper martini at Bar Planet has the correct amount of olives

There's no such thing as too much of a good thing.

When making a dirty martini, tradition states that the bartender must use either one or three olives. But if you’re a true olive fan, you’ll know this is nowhere near enough.

The correct amount is, of course, seven. At least, that’s how many you’ll find in the “Skyscraper” martini at Bar Planet in Newtown.

The cult inner west martini bar has launched a secret menu item called the Skyscraper. It started as a bit of an in-joke, but after a picture was shared on Instagram, there have been requests.

“We’ve only just started calling it the Skyscraper, but we always get requests for more olives. People want as many olives as they’re allowed,” says Bar Planet Art Director Clayton Ciolac.

While there’s no official limit as to how many you can ask for, seven is indeed plenty, with the septet of green pitted Australian Kalamata olives carefully threaded on a skewer and balanced on the rim of the drink.

And don’t even ask about the del-tini. Apparently, it’s a deli martini with an olive, pickled onion and prosciutto garnish. “That one isn’t on the secret menu, but we’ve had people bring in prosciutto and ask us to make it. It’s a local custom favourite.”

You never know. If you start asking for it, it might just become a thing.
