Here’s what you can drink to celebrate your keto success

Drinks istock.

Friday drinks threatening to spoil your low-carb life? Here’s what you *can* drink without sabotaging your keto successes.

If you’re deep into that ketosis life but still want to maintain a certain level of social frivolity, we get you. Eating a low-carb diet is commitment enough without having to give up drinks too. The good news: if you’re doing the keto diet, you don’t have to give up on weekend drinks entirely. Here’s how to keep living that keto life while enjoying the occasional tipple.

Can you drink alcohol on the keto diet?

In short: yes, you can drink alcohol on the keto diet. Luckily, being a keto devotee needn’t mean forgoing drinks with friends of a weekend. It’s all about finding the right (low-carb) drinks – and, you know, consuming in moderation.

Which types of alcohol can you drink on the keto diet?

If you’re a spirits enthusiast, you’re in luck. Pure, clean spirits, including gin, vodka, whiskey, tequila and rum are almost entirely free of carbs – meaning they won’t break your hard-earned state of ketosis. Those who prefer wine or beer need to opt for low-carb varieties (and learn to read labels to find out just how many carbs you’re consuming). Generally speaking, dry wines contain fewer carbs (or sugars) than sweet ones.

If you’re only having a couple of drinks, a low-carb beer or dry red or white wine is a reasonable choice. But, if you think you have a big night on the cards, it may be better to opt for spirits. Or, consider having fewer drinks (and learning to drink in moderation).

Of course, if you are drinking spirits, it’s important to remember that mixers (juices or soft drinks, for example) can be extremely high in sugar. So, if you can, go for sparkling (soda) water, a small squeeze of lemon juice or lime, or sugar-free sodas. And, remember to stay hydrated between drinks.
