You can safely take those beers out of quarantine now.
Too afraid to order a bucket of your favourite beers? You’re not the only one. Google Trends has revealed that people around the world are confusing the deadly viral infection with the easy-drinking Mexican lager.
Sure, after 10 or so Coronas you might feel a bit queasy, but that is in no way connected to the coronavirus, which has so far killed 213 people and has the Chinese city of Wuhan in lockdown.
According to data from Google Trends, searches for “corona beer virus” have spiked since January 18, jumping 2300% in just one week.
The search term was revealed to be most popular in Cambodia, followed by Slovenia, Singapore, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates. “Beer virus” searches were most popular in Singapore, then Latvia, Slovenia, Australia, and Canada.
A spokesperson for Consellation Brands, which owns Corona, issued a statement saying: “We believe that consumers, by and large, understand there’s no linkage between the virus and our beer/business.”
Just to clear things up, “corona” translates to “crown” in Latin and the coronavirus is so named for its external cell structure, which is covered in small, crown-like spikes.
So there you have it. If you’ve had your beers in quarantine, feel free to go and get them out now.
