No, we’re not joking.
The AFL and wine are not generally synonymous. In fact, when it comes to quenching your thirst while watching the game, the footy typically tends to be paired with a cold beer. But that’s about to change with the news that the Sydney Swans have just welcomed a wine in their honour, courtesy of the illustrious Bird in Hand.
In a toast to the 150th anniversary of the celebrated AFL club, the South Australian-based winery has introduced a series of special-edition cases of Bird in Hand’s 2016 Nest Egg Cabernet Sauvignon. These limited-edition drops boast labels which represent significant club milestones along the way (a must-have collection for any diehard Swans supporter). Despite the rather unexpected partnership, the collaboration is a sign of Bird in Hand’s continued support of the team – in fact, they’re the official wine partner of both the Sydney Swans’ AFL and AFLW teams (and will be until the end of the 2025 season).

For Bird in Hand co-founder Andrew Nugent, these special drops are just another chance to pay tribute to one of the star teams of the sport, and celebrate their achievements over the years; “We are proud to present these limited-edition wines in collaboration with the Sydney Swans,” he says. “The sets unite iconic moments from the club’s 150-year journey with one of our exclusive wines from the pinnacle Nest Egg collection.”
