An intriguing white grape that is fermented on its skins, this is a wine of interest and high drinkability. It’s reminiscent of tonic water with a refreshing squeeze of lemon, though there’s more going on, and texturally it’s lightly chalky and very frisky.
6 new homegrown drops we've got on repeat this month
Aussie winemakers are embracing Italian varieties, and they’re knocking it out of the park. Mike Bennie shares his top drops.
Delinquente Hell Series Red Blend 2018, $33
From a youngergeneration winemaker and an organic vineyard in the Riverland wine region, this unusual blend of montepulciano and nero d’avola is a red of fleshy texture and richness, but vibrant spice and green herb character. Pair it with heartier Italian fare.
Latta Tranquil Nebbiolo 2018, $35
Owen Latta is a brilliant winemaker, reinventing much of what we expect from Italian grape varieties in Australia. This nebbiolo comes out more like a rosé or very light red and is very delicious to drink. It would dress up an Italian dinner party well.
Moorooduc Pinot Gris On Skins 2018, $40
Though a traditional Mornington Peninsula pinot noir and chardonnay focused producer, this skin-fermented gris is a great addition to the range. It’s lightly chewy in texture, rosé-like in its feel, fragrant and charming. Get the fancy glasses and jump in.
Quealy Pobblebonk 2018, $25
Quealy has curiously fermented together Italian varieties pinot grigio, friulano and moscato giallo with more commonly found riesling and chardonnay. The result is a complex, wildly delicious white of slippery texture and huge perfume, perfect for casual drinking.

Pumpkin
Pumpkin is in its peak season. Choose heavy, brightly coloured pieces to add natural sweetness to your autumn cooking.
Calabria Private Bin Aglianico 2016, $15
Aglianico is one of those almost thirst-quenching red wines, high in natural acidity which lends a crunchiness to the texture. It’s pretty in perfume, light, gently spicy and vibrant to taste. I’d see spag bol, pizza or lasagne in its near future. And maybe a light chill.
