Big news for the beer business and beer fans alike.
If you weren’t aware, Brisbane is obsessed with beer. It may seem an outlandish fact, but not once you take a look at the evidence. In 2017 alone, Brisbane led the country when it came to urban brewery openings; the river city was host to 17 new breweries alone of the 49 in total. And now that number is set to grow with plans for a $15 million beer centre in the works.
Brisbane local (and passionate home brewer) Shaun Lockwood has lodged plans with the Brisbane City Council for a multi-purpose centre to be established in the city’s Morningside. The space will act as an incubator brewery for anyone who wishes to brew beer; from up-and-coming brewers, to those working off contract.
There will also be space for established brands eager to expand their capacity or on the hunt for a Queensland location, as well as the potential for limited-edition brews to be made for the likes of festivals and bars. The facility plans to boast a 200,000-litre capacity, be open for 24 hours a day, and would allow up to five individual brewers per day to create their own beer.
Lockwood has said that the centre’s proposed benefits include ample further growth in the craft beer sector both in Queensland and Australia-wide. All going well (and pending council approval) the beer facility is scheduled to open in December this year.
