Why you need to be eating French fries with Champagne

Never settle for anything less again.

We’ve been saying it for a long time – just because you enjoy a quality glass of bubbles, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have it with food you actually love – like French fries.

And for those of you who hate French fries (who are you?), please stop reading, or reassess your life choices.

At a recent wine dinner in Hong Kong, Moet & Chandon’s wine quality and communication manager, Marie-Christine Osselin, revealed French fries to be the optimal pairing for Champagne.

According to Osselin, it’s the zesty acidity of the Champagne that helps to cut through the saltiness and fat of the fries, making it the ultimate match.

This isn’t the first time this pairing has been recommended. The French have always known it, with their affinity for pommes frites – they basically invented French fries. And, well, Champagne too.

But don’t go loading your fries to the nth degree, it’s best to keep it simple when you’re matching your favourite glass (we mean bottle).  “Champagne is a wine that asks for simple ingredients, no more than three,” Osselin said.

So next time you’re out, don’t feel bad if all you want is a plate of fries with your glass of Champagne. We’ll stand by you.
