#girlsonfire: Cheers to IWD with Australia’s best winemakers

Cellarmasters

Celebrate the girls taking on the grape business.

It’s International Women’s Day and in celebration why not cheers to the leading ladies in food and drink. You’ll have your chance with the latter category in particular when some of Australia’s best female winemakers congregate in Sydney this evening as a part of Cellarmasters’ Meet the Makers: Women in Wine.

The event is an opportunity for wine lovers and wine makers alike to mingle (and taste test a range of different bottles of course). “There are so many amazing, female winemakers in Australia, so we wanted to take a day to celebrate them, and give consumers a chance to taste some exceptional wines on International Women’s Day,” says Cellarmasters’ Christine Ricketts of the event. Statistically the number of women in wine is on the rise, with Wine Australia stating that female involvement has risen from 35 to 38 percent in the past 7 years. Female representation in senior roles is lacking however, at an estimated less than 10 percent.

Meet the Makers is a chance to celebrate, as well as raise awareness about the leading ladies of the grape business. “Winemaking is a tough job for anyone with long work hours especially during harvest, and it’s great to see women thriving in this great industry, and using their voice to promote the wines and the regions that they love,” says Pepper Tree Wines head winemaker Gwyn Olsen.

The ticketed event will take place in Walsh Bay, where 40 different wines from some of the country’s most renowned winemakers, will be available to try. Tickets are $39 and available online.
