Get ready to plan a trip to wine country. Words by Lindy Alexander.
Unless you’ve got a friend who is pregnant or a teetotaller, finding a designated driver for a day out sampling the offerings of various wineries is a tricky business. But did you know that since 2017 the ride-sharing platform Uber has been offering UberVino?
For an hourly fare of around $40, you can curate an ideal day out amongst the vines without needing to worry if you should have had that last glass of Pinot.
Your driver patiently waits for you at each stop and unlike other wine tours where you have to follow someone else’s schedule for the duration, if you decide to linger longer at one vineyard or that the cellar door is too busy at another, you can easily move on.
There’s no limit to the time or distance on UberVino trips, although there is a minimum fare of $50 (but we think that’s pretty reasonable, after all, an hour is barely long enough to smell the rosé at one vineyard).
So why haven’t you heard about this? Well, it’s probably because UberVino is currently only available in the Adelaide Hills and the Swan Valley in Western Australia. Given the popularity of vineyard hopping in the Yarra Valley, the Mornington Peninsula, the Hunter Valley and the Riverina, we’re not sure why UberVino isn’t available throughout Australia.
The equivalent of UberVino in the United States, UberWINE, has been available since 2015, and we’ve got our fingers crossed that the rest of Australia gets connected soon.
