And they're not allowed to travel together.
Some people just aren’t meant to be secret keepers. Sordid info will find its way into the group chat or spill out over a second glass of wine. The consequences are some dented trust and a lot of guilt. For others, letting slip could be a bit more serious. Especially if the secret is worth $438 billion.
According to Coca-Cola lore, there are only two people in the world who know the actual recipe for the most popular soft drink on the planet. And even then, neither secret keeper is told every single ingredient – just in case.
Just like urban legends, there are a lot of blurred lines when it comes to separating truth from speculation where Coca-Cola is concerned. For instance, it sounds a bit bonkers that a handwritten note in a secure vault is the only written copy of the recipe.

It sounds insane that those who know the recipe are kept completely anonymous, even among their colleagues. And it’s downright ludicrous that there is a Chosen One in each generation that inherits the secret formula. Right?
As it turns out, fact really is stranger than fiction, and the good people at Coca-Cola will be the first to admit that.
Since its invention in 1886 by Dr John S. Pemberton, demand for the recipe could be compared to the search for the Holy Grail. It has been used as collateral for bank loans. It has been hidden, untouched in a locked vault for 86 years. It has been transferred to the World of Coca‑Cola in Atlanta where thousands of people visit the Vault of the Secret Formula every year.
It has also been featured in a critically acclaimed book by William Poundstone called Big Secrets: The Uncensored Truth About All Sorts of Stuff You Are Never Supposed to Know.

Poundstone reveals from beneath his tinfoil hat that only two employees are privy to the formula at any given time and they are not permitted to travel together. When one dies, the other must choose a successor within the company to pass the secret on to.
Of course, this could all just be a clever marketing ploy but there’s a lot of fun to a little mystery and even if we knew the truth, our lips are sealed.
What is the recipe for Coca-Cola?
You didn’t think it would be that easy, did you? According to the Coca-Cola website, there have been many recipes that claim to be authentic but no one has cracked the code. What we do know, however, is that the real thing contains flavours like vanilla, lime, coca leaf, caramel, orange, cinnamon, lemon, coriander, nutmeg and neroli.
