Also known as the New Zealand grapefruit, the unusual fruit is a cross between a tangerine and pomelo.
If you love the bright, refreshing taste of a citrussy spirit (who doesn’t), you better start clearing some space on the drinks trolley. This month, Sydney-based distillery Archie Rose is set to release a zesty Poorman’s orange and Green Emerald finger lime gin.
The tipple is the first in a new line of harvest-inspired gins that pay tribute to the country’s best produce and the growers behind it.
The inaugural gin is primarily made from Poorman’s orange, a tangerine and pomelo hybrid, that was grown in the Hunter Valley by boutique farmer Peter Dryden. The fruit was in such short supply that Archie Rose had to split the crop with Restaurant Orana, with Archie taking the peel and Orana keeping the fruit. The Poorman’s orange is said to add notes of mandarin, sherbert and grapefruit to the spirit.
Also sourced from Peter Dryden’s farm, the gin incorporates Bergamot oranges, for its classic earl grey flavours, along with emerald green finger limes and lemon-scented gum, grown by Vickie Shina from Marvick Native Farms in Western Australia.

The Archie Rose Harvest Gin 2019 will be priced at $89 for a 700ml bottle. It will be available to buy from February 24, 2020, from independent bottle shops, the Archie Rose bar and online at archierose.com.au.
