Two of Australia’s top drinks producers – one better known for its botanical-boasting night caps and the other for luring its drinkers out of bed in the morning – Archie Rose Distilling Co. and ST. ALi coffee roasters and have teamed up to produce a coffee whisky shamelessly named Blasphemy.

Combining top-notch Archie Rose Single Malt Whisky and ST. Ali Orthodox & Wide Awake Coffee, the resulting ‘coffee whisky’ can only be a blessing. Sacrilege be damned.

“I love whisky as much as I love coffee. The coming together of our products has created the unicorn, a delicious and rare pairing,” says ST. ALi founder Salvatore Malatesta.

The roasters and distillers behind Blasphemous insist this sinful drop is not a whisky, nor a liqueur – it’s something in an irreverent category of its own. The ungodly coupling is brimming with aromatic fruits, alongside amaretto and dark chocolate. Some might call them the holy trinity.

Prescriptive afficionados from both the coffee and whisky worlds may find this blend blasphemous, but sometimes two wrongs can make a delicious right – which is certainly the case with this richly scented spirit. Some rules are just praying to be broken.

Will Edwards, Archie Rose’s founder says, “Blasphemy is the subversion of two liquid obsessions and although strict whisky and coffee purists might consider it an abuse of both liquids, it’s a pairing that when you taste it, and understand the production processes, actually makes perfect sense.”

As dedicated Archie Rose disciples will know, its limited-edition spirits rarely last long. Available from Wednesday, July 28 via both stali.com.au and archierose.com.au, ST. Those lucky enough to get their hands on this one can enjoy it neat or accompanied by sweet vermouth, orange peel and a splash of Campari in a Boulevardier.
