Mixers are the accompanying alcoholic or non-alcoholic liquids that tease out the juniper, botanicals, citrus, berries and all the best qualities in your favourite gin. Besides the classic tonic, non-alcoholic mixers have come a long way, and some are specifically created to match the flavour profile of particular gins, such as yuzu or elderflower.

For pink gin, you want the berries to sing, so consider a good swig of soda and muddled or frozen strawberries. Heading into the alcoholic mixer zone, you can’t go past prosecco or vermouth, which create complex cocktails that are gorgeous served as an aperitif but can also stand up to substantial food. Here’s some more interesting mixers to introduce to your gin.

Gin Mixers

StrangeLove Dirty Tonic Water, 180ml, New South Wales, $10.49 per pack of 4

The Australian-made StrangeLove mixers are pushing boundaries, so prepare your taste buds. The addition of raw, unrefined cinchona bark in the intriguingly named ‘Dirty Tonic’ creates a peppery, herbaceous and earthy flavour profile – find the gin that features these qualities, and you’ll have your balmy Sunday session sorted. Dirty has never tasted so refreshing.

Alberto Nani Organic Prosecco, 750ml, Italy, $16.99

From prosecco’s motherland comes the Alberto Nani Organic Prosecco. This vibrant and effervescent Italian treat is a simple way to elevate your gin. Mix with lashings of fresh lemon and a dash of honey, and enjoy while snacking on a charcuterie board featuring cured Italian meats.

Castagna Classic Dry Vermouth, 750ml, Victoria, $54.99

Gin and vermouth are the firm foundation of one of the world’s most famous cocktails – the dry gin martini. Stir or shake with this Beechworth dry vermouth, pop in a few olives or a twist of lemon, and that’s it, simple. If you’ve enjoyed a few martinis in your time, you know too well that the strength of this cocktail requires pairing with a substantial meal. Try your martini with a steak sandwich – the saltiness of your steak will enhance the drink’s flavour (and hopefully soak up some of the alcohol).

CAPI Sparkling Mineral Water, 750mL, Victoria, $3.29

When the quality of a gin needs no embellishment, I head straight for a soda or sparkling water like CAPI. It’s a clean slate to add whatever garnish you’d like, to let the botanicals of the gin shine. Think rosemary, grapefruit, peppercorns, cucumber, or perhaps pink gin with frozen blueberries.

Fever-Tree Premium Elderflower Tonic Water, 200ml, United Kingdom, $8.99

Elderflower tastes as pretty as it sounds. This addition in your tonic creates a floral, aromatic and slightly sweeter twist on the classic G&T. For the coldest, most refreshing G&T possible, pop your highball glass in the freezer. And instead of adding cucumber to your drink, why not whip up a few cucumber sandwiches?

East Imperial Yuzu Tonic 4pk x 150ml, New Zealand, $8.99

Yuzu is a citrus grown mainly in east Asia, often called the Japanese lemon. It’s tart, floral and the perfect fruit to buddy up with your G&T, just as East Imperial have done here with their yuzu tonic. It allows the gin’s spice and citrus notes to come alive and dance right out of the tumbler and into your mouth.

Schweppes Lemonade Zero Sugar, 1.1l, Australia, $2.59

Ye ole’ lemon and gin – simple, yet so effective. I’ve chosen the sugar-free lemonade here because it tastes as good as the full-sugar version and, after lockdown, we could all do with a few less calories, amiright? Add lemon wedges along with a good squeeze of fresh juice and a few mint leaves and you have a refreshing, sweet and tart summer banger.

La Croix Pamplemousse Grapefruit 355ml, United States, $24.99 per pack of 12

Pamplemousse is French for grapefruit, and this little gem is a sugar-free mix of the natural fruit and sparkling water. Grapefruit has always represented that perfect balance between sweet and tart and is brilliant at levelling up spirits in simple cocktails. Mix your gin and the La Croix Pamplemousse over ice with a sprig of thyme and a slice of grapefruit, and you’ll understand.

Fever-Tree Premium Ginger Ale Bottles, 200mL, United Kindgom, $8.99 per pack of 4

Although ginger ale and ginger beer are both a fantastic mixers for gin, I prefer ginger ale, as it allows the flavour of the gin to come through a little more vividly. Garnish with raw grated ginger to up the spice and pepperiness and a garnish with a few lime wedges.

Long Rays Premium Australian Tonic, 275mL, Queensland, $9.99 per pack of 4

You can’t go past a classic G&T, and Long Rays Australian tonic absolutely makes gin sing. Light in flavour, with native pepperberry and lemon myrtle, pair this combination with spicy fried samosas – the clean, refreshing and tangy taste of a G&T will cut through the heat of the samosa, and the botanicals will pair nicely with the samosa’s spices.

What mixer should I have with pink gin?

A little prosecco and lemonade create an instantly refreshing pink gin spritz that is very hard to beat.

What mixer goes with cherry gin?

A light Indian tonic water pairs perfectly with a cherry gin.

What mixer goes with Bombay Sapphire gin?

A zingy lemon or yuzu-flavoured soda is a delight with Bombay Sapphire gin.
