Whisky (and winter) is coming.
The much-awaited eighth and final season of Game of Thrones will air on 15 April in Australia, and what better way to celebrate than with a wee dram (or two) of a single malt Scotch whisky inspired by the hit TV series.
A collaboration between Game of Thrones, Diageo and HBO has prompted the release of a limited-edition collection of seven Scotch whiskies, paired with six of the iconic Houses of Westeros, as well as the Night’s Watch, to give fans an intimate taste of the Seven Kingdoms.
As the world’s largest producer of spirits, Diageo has a number of different distilleries in Scotland, each of which has its own particular characteristics, much like in Westeros.
“We’re excited that the Game of Thrones Single Malt Scotch Whisky Collection will be hitting shelves in more countries around the world,” says Pedro Mendonca, global reserve marketing and malts director. “We are thrilled to be celebrating the final season of the show by toasting with whiskies that authentically pay homage to some of the greatest characters and houses.”
The whiskies, which are individually priced between $65 – $130 per bottle, saw at least two UK-based retailers sell out of initial stock in mere hours. In Australia, you’ll be able to buy your stash from liquor stores from the end of March.
If you’re a fan, the tough part will be choosing which whisky to try first, as each pairing comes with its own backstory.
We love the idea behind the Game of Thrones House Targaryen – Cardhu Gold Reserve, which is inspired by Daenerys Targaryen and her fierce female leadership, ability to overcome hardship and perseverance. During the 1800s, at a time when the whisky industry was almost entirely male-dominated, Helen Cumming and her daughter-in-law Elizabeth were the pioneers behind the Cardhu Distillery.
Just as Robert Baratheon ruled the Seven Kingdoms upon the Iron Throne, the Game of Thrones House Baratheon – Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old is inspired by royal lineage. Royal Lochnagar was granted a Royal Warrant after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the distillery in 1848.
It looks like the final season of the series is going to be just as brutal and epic as the ones that preceded it. So with that, it’s time to choose your house and raise your glass.
