Make room in the liquor cabinet: the 2019 Australian Gin Awards have been announced

Never Never Distilling Co.

Or in other words, your summer drinking list is here.

A bunch of lucky judges – including gin and whiskey expert Bill Lark – have sampled over 150 craft gins to bring you the six best bottles in the country.

This year, the competition was divided into six classes, including: Classic Dry, Contemporary, Matured, Old Tom, Australian Navy and Flavoured, with one winner for each category, and an overall winner crowned Best in Show.

Okay, enough stalling. Here are the winners for 2019:

Classic Dry: Never Never Distilling Co. Southern Strength Gin
Contemporary: Archie Rose. Distiller’s Strength Gin
Matured: The West Winds Gin. Barrel Expedition 11
Old Tom: Kangaroo Island Spirits. KIS Old Tom
Australian Navy:  Mt Uncle Distillery. Botanic Australia Navy Strength
Flavoured:  Darby-Norris Distillery. Blueberry Gin

As for the grand prize, Never Never Distilling Co from Adelaide emerged victorious, taking out the title of Best in Show for their Southern Strength Gin. The juniper-spiked spirit reveals fragrant pine and citrus on the nose, followed by earthy notes of angelica root and coriander seed on the palate. It finishes rich and robust with pepper berry spice and a late-developing cinnamon warmth. The judges described the winning gin as being “immediately delicious on the palate rising to a rich high point”The same gin was also awarded World’s Best Classic Gin in the World Gin Awards earlier this year.
