Moscato is a sweet wine made from muscat grapes. These grapes lead a double life as tasty table grapes, which might help you understand how much sugar they contain.
Originally from Italy, muscat grapes are now widely grown and popular around the world – Australians are big fans. You may see them bottled in white, fizzy or rosé wine styles, served chilled.
Its friendly acid, low alcohol and sweetness makes moscato great for spicy Asian dishes, or with a fruit platter or dessert to round out your night. The wine has also taken off in the world of brunch due to its low alcohol level and refreshing zing. Drink it alongside your pancakes, or perhaps poured over them instead of maple syrup…

Innocent Bystander Pink Moscato, 2020, Victoria, $17 Member offer
Just looking at this vibrant, flamingo-pink bottle of fun makes me want to hit the day club. Prepare to be sent into sensory overdrive with notes of Turkish delight, bright red berries and nougat. Black and gordo muscat grapes create this bubbly party-pleaser from Swan Hill and, at 5.5% alcohol, it might just be the perfect adult drink for all those kids’ parties.

Tread softly Moscato, 2019, $13.99
You shouldn’t judge a wine by its label but, in this case, I think the Tread Softly bottle has done a splendid job of describing its contents though its exterior. A simple, classic white label with a delicate floral touch gives you a sense of what’s soon to be in your mouth. Expect those pretty floral notes to translate to your palate, along with refreshing acidity and juicy, plump berries. One glass may not be enough!

McGuigan The Plan Moscato 2020, South Eastern Australia, $9.99
This wine is not a bad ‘plan’ at all for a sunny Sunday afternoon. McGuigan’s ‘The Plan’ range hails from South Eastern Australia’s great grape growing regions – showcasing fruit-forward, easy-to-slurp, everyday drops – and this moscato is a delightful addition to the collection. Musk-stick characteristics, tropical fruits and candied lemon make it a lip-smacking match to a spicy Thai-style salad.

Belena Moscato, NV, Australia, $18.99
Could you walk past this wine on a shelf without stopping for a second glance? I think not. The unique bottle screams ‘gift me!’ and is likely to wind up displaying a flower arrangement. Until then, pop it on ice and enjoy the tasty flavours of honeysuckle, apricot and ripe peach soon to coat your palate.

Brown Brothers Moscato, 2018, King Valley, $12.50
Brown Brother’s reputation as one of the most-popular moscato producers in Australia is well justified. This white moscato is a relaxed, breezy afternoon fun with friends in a bottle. Lovely aromas of soft citrus, with musk and ripe tropical fruits on the palate, make this a delight alongside a light fruit platter after a long, lazy lunch.

Fiore Moscato, 2020, Mudgee, $16.99
This delicate drop from the renowned Robert Oatley family comes from the historic Mudgee wine region in NSW. Their cellar door (along with the town) is well worth a visit. Subtly spritzy, this wine’s sweetness is nicely balanced by its acidity. Fiore means ‘flower’ in Italian so expect pretty, soft floral aromas – best enjoyed on a picnic rug in your local gardens.

Zonzo Moscato, NV, Yarra Valley, $19.99
A quick glance at this bottle tells you a good time will soon be kicking off! This soft peachy pink fizz is wrapped with an apt label that screams laughs and love with good food and friends. Let the sweet fizz of apricot and ripe nectarine take the lead; that pavlova you’re about to serve has never met a better match.

Brown Brothers One Rosé Moscato Spritz, $5.99 per can
One Rosé indeed: no sharing this little guy. I’m a big fan of wine in a can. The packaging is more environmentally friendly, and you don’t have to share a whole bottle (because moscato isn’t for everyone). This refreshing, sweet spritz of Turkish delight and strawberries is perfect poured over a glass of ice as an aperitif, or alongside a spicy Asian noodle dish.

Telmo Rodriguez Mr Moscatel Mountain, 2014, Spain $49.99
Heading into more exotic, higher-end levels, this is the perfect bottle if you love your moscato but want a bit of added complexity into the mix. This is a clean, crisp, more serious style of moscato from the steep stony vineyards of Malaga, in southern Spain. With beautiful acid, a luxe mouthfeel with floral aromas and spiced orange, marmalade and stone fruit, this is a truly gorgeous wine. Go on, spoil yourself!
