Australia is full of spectacular wine drives - let's test the best!
The limestone coast, in South Australia, between Adelaide and the Victorian border, feels like a real getaway. Drive across wide-open landscapes by the wetlands and birdlife of the Coorong, enjoy wild and uncrowded beaches and stop off at historic seaside towns such as Robe. Enjoy wines from Mt Benson, Cape Jaffa, Wrattonbully and Padthaway as you go, or take a turn inland to Coonawarra for some of the country’s best cabernet sauvignon.
The Tamar Valley Wine Route in northern Tasmania is a well-organised meander through some of Australia’s great southern wine stars. The route heads north out of Launceston and, as well as covering many wineries, takes in the natural beauty of the Tamar River. If you have extra time, take in the east coast wine route too, which passes beautiful Freycinet and Wineglass Bays.
For those who would like something a little closer to the city, the Yarra Valley is only an hour from Melbourne. The towns of Healesville and Yarra Glen include excellent restaurants, breweries and bars, while the region is renowned for making stunning cool-climate syrah, pinot noir and some of the country’s best chardonnay.
If you’re looking for a longer journey, the Great Southern of Western Australia is the country’s largest and most remote wine region. As well as wild beaches and forests, there are fve sub-regions, including Porongurup, Mount Barker and Frankland River. These have built a reputation on producing outstanding riesling, chardonnay, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon.
