A certain Australian suburb has taken the crown for chart-topping levels of Champagne drinking, purchasing the most bubbles across the country for 2018.
According to new data from Australian wine retailers ‘Cellarmasters’, Mosman has a penchant for cracking open a bottle of bubbly more than any other suburb. Better still, this isn’t the first time Mosman has taken out the title, winning first place in 2017 as well. Australia’s biggest wine influencer Joe Menez, from Once Upon a Wine, wasn’t surprised by the results. “Mosmanites are sophisticated drinkers. They enjoy trying different champagnes and they’re prepared to pay for it, plus we have some stunning locations to enjoy them,” he said. Menez also commented on the likelihood of Mosman homes possessing a wine fridge (or three), with some even boasting a cellar to house their elaborate Champagne and wine collections. With thirsty Mosman dwellers both drinking and storing their bubbles, it explains the large champagne quota in the area.
It’s likely these figures are also rising due to the transformation of champagne from an occasion-only drink to a delicious drop to be enjoyed at all hours. Christine Ricketts, Cellar Director at Cellarmasters believes that Champagne is one of the world’s most food-friendly wines, not limited to celebrations or accompanying delicate dishes such as oysters. “Thanks to its high levels of acidity and varying levels of richness, you can match the right Champagne with almost anything!” she says.
The win was followed closely by Buderim on the Sunshine Coast, Sydney CBD, Blakehurst and Castle Hill. With Australia ranking as the sixth biggest export market and over 8.5 million bottles consumed in 2017, it’s fair to say our obsession with the French fizz will continue to rise. Only time will tell if Mosmanites will take out the title for a third year in 2019, but for now the suburb’s ritzy residents will no doubt celebrate their current accolade by popping a cork (or two).
