Trio triumphant: three new Aussie wines to try

Wine bottles
So many wines, so little time.

Youthful exuberance often trumps experience when tasting wines of vivid personality. Here are three examples of wines being produced by ‘younger generation’ winemakers from Australia.

1. Waratah Hills

Marcus Satchell has a frenetic energy, but his wines are sleek and elegant. This chardonnay shows great balance between gently cedary oak and stone fruit, and is bright and crisp to drink. Waratah Hills Chardonnay 2010 ($32).

2. Mount Pleasant

The one to watch here is Gwyn Olsen. Her deft touch with pinot noir from New South Wales’ famed Hunter Valley has resulted in this excellent medium-bodied wine. Mothervine Pinot Noir 2011 ($48).

3. Heemskerk

Anna Pooley’s skills shine at Tasmania’s Heemskerk. The 2008 sparkling is stunning and supremely defined with super-fine bubbles, crisp fruit flavours and great purity. Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2008 ($60).
