Stay classy, TikTok.

La Vieille Ferme Rosé, or as the internet likes to call it, “Chicken Wine,” has clucked its way into the hearts of wine drinkers everywhere – especially on TikTok. This French rosé is cheap, cheerful, and the kind of drink that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

So what’s the deal with this so-called “Chicken Wine”? Well, it’s named after the charming little chickens on the label, which has become its signature mascot. Available for about $15, basically everywhere wine is sold, it’s a bargain that’s light on the wallet but big on charisma. Whether you’re a seasoned wine snob or just someone who likes a cheeky glass with dinner, this rosé doesn’t disappoint. It’s not overly dry yet doesn’t have the syrupy sweetness of a “cheap” rosé – kind of like the Goldilocks of rosés.

But here’s the thing: Chicken Wine isn’t just about what’s in the bottle. It’s about the vibe. It’s the kind of wine that’s fine to pair with a three-course meal or a bucket of KFC. Sure, it may be bogan-coded but people love it for exactly that reason. It’s the everyman’s (or everywoman’s) rosé—fancy enough to impress your friends, but down-to-earth enough that you don’t feel like you’re trying too hard.

The wine has become a bit of an equaliser. It’s not about being fancy or knowing the difference between a syrah and a shiraz. It’s about enjoying something that’s simple, tasty, and makes you feel good – whether you’re drinking it in your backyard or at a dinner party.

The chooks have become such a phenomenon that there are even Etsy creators dedicated to making Chicken Wine merch, thousands of videos on TikToks singing its praises, and entire nebulous personalities when Chicken Wine time comes around.

The wine itself has some credible chops too. Created in the Southern Rhône Valley of France by the Perrin family which has been operating since 1997, the La Vieille Ferme Rosé (blend of cinsault, grenache, and syrah) has taken out multiple awards across the globe, and even plucked an 87/100 in the 2024 Decanter wine awards.
