Wine + Champagne

Would you spend $22,000 on a bottle of Champagne?

Cristal

Because you can at this Sydney bar.

Perhaps you want to celebrate a particularly momentous occasion, or perhaps you just have the cash to burn, whatever the case, big spenders will no doubt find their tipple of choice by Sydney’s Darling Harbour. It’s there that the Champagne Bar at the Sofitel lives; home to an abundance of outrageously priced booze for those with discerning tastes and deep pockets.

Within the rows of premium bubbles available you’ll find a limited edition Jeroboam of the 2002 vintage Louis Roederer Cristal, which can be bought for $22,000 over the bar.

Why so expensive? The Champagne is considering to be one of the most outstanding vintages in recent history. It is lauded among critics as ‘tightrope vintage’; or for us mere mortals, when firm acidity balances out the opulence of the fruit.

“2002 was an outstanding vintage, most likely the best of the decade. The finest 2002s are powerful, firmly structured and truly mineral but neither lack freshness nor finesse,” commented experts The Wine Advocate. 2002 was a year that provided Champagne houses with perfect growing conditions and fine, dry weather at harvest.

But as to whether that makes the drink $22,000 worth, we’ll let you be the judge.
