Nestle has just announced the new names for its controversial Red Skin and Chicos lollies.

The chewy raspberry straps will henceforth be known as Red Ripper, while the chocolate-flavoured jelly babies are to be called Cheekies.

Nestle announced in June this year that the original names were ‘out of step’ with its company values.

Red Skins is a derogatory term for Native Americans and the original Red Skins wrapper featured a Native American in a traditional headdress. Meanwhile, Chicos is a slur for people of Latin American descent.

Nestle general manager of confectionery Chris O’Donnell said: “Nestle has an unwavering commitment to upholding respect for our friends, neighbours and colleagues.

“We hope Australians will support the evolution of these two much-loved lollies – while the names are new, the lollies themselves remain unchanged.

“We will keep pack changes simple to help lolly lovers find their favourites easily.”

The renamed products are expected to appear on shelves from early next year.

Australian icon Coon cheese is also expected to undergo a name change in the near future, with the finalised name still yet to be announced.
