The home of the watermelon strawberry cake cited tough economic conditions as the reason for closing.

The home of the world’s most Instagrammed cake – the strawberry and watermelon Black Star Pastry, has announced today that all three Melbourne stores will close. The final service for the St Kilda, Chadstone & Melbourne CBD stores will be this Sunday, August 18.

The announcement on Instagram post assures fans that while Black Star may be saying goodbye to Melbourne, the team will be focusing its energies on the existing Sydney stores.

“Rising costs, a tough economic climate and an industry-wide staffing shortage have forced us to consolidate our team and we will shift our focus to our original home of Sydney. All Sydney stores: Newtown, Sydney CBD, Rosebery, and Chatswood, alongside pop-ups at Burwood and Broadway, will continue operating as normal.”

Who owns Black Star Pastry?

Black Star first opened in Melbourne back in 2019 in St Kilda before a Chadstone addition in 2022. The cake company’s most recent Melbourne opening was only in April 2023, on Driver Lane in the CBD.

Founded in Sydney by pastry chef Christopher Thé in 2008, the pastry shop and café became an instant hit and was later bought by Melbourne hotelier Louis Li in 2018. Li is the son of a Chinese billionaire and owns the Jackalope Hotel Group.
