Eat Out

Get out the sourdough, a glut of affordable avos is heading our way

Avocados.

The catch? They’re all Shepard.

Smashed avo on toast is set to be the new breakfast of quarantined champions, with a surplus of cheap, ripe fruit on its way.

There are two reasons for the recent glut. Firstly, avocados have been largely forgotten in all the toilet paper and tinned food madness, causing the number of avos to accumulate.

“We noticed a major hurry on pasta and rice at the price of perishable merchandise like avocados,” CEO of Avocados Australia, John Tyas told Pedestrian.TV.

“We are looking at an abundance of fruit in shops at actually excellent worth at the minute, so vendors are genuinely trying to move as much as they can via shops,” he said.

Secondly, avocados destined for cafes have now been redirected to the supermarkets, while export stock has also been grounded.

“What would ordinarily be getting exported at the moment is also going on to the domestic industry just due to the fact of the deficiency of freight options,” Tyas added.

“It’s quite a whole lot of fruit that’s struggling to uncover a market place at the moment.”

The only problem is, they’re all Shepard. The autumn fruit is considered a green menace by many, due to its rubbery texture and seeming inability to ripen.

“I’d stimulate people today to have another go at the humble Shepard, for the reason that it actually is a fantastic solution,” Tyas said.

Sounds like someone wants to shift some Shepards. Good luck with that.
