Strict new buying limits now apply to beer, wine and spirits.

Bottle shops around the country will be limiting how much alcohol Aussies can buy from Wednesday, April 1 – and it’s not a cruel April Fool’s joke.

The strict new limits apply to all BWS, Liquorland, Dan Murphy’s, Aldi, Vintage Cellars and First Choice Liquor stores, as well as mobile bottle-o Jimmy Brings and select Cellarbrations, Bottle-O, IGA Liquor, Duncans, Thirsty Camel, Liquor Legends, Urban Cellars and Liquor Stax shops.

From today, Australians will be restricted to purchasing two cases of beer, cider and mixed drinks, 12 bottles of wine, two cask wines (no more than 10 litres) and two bottles of spirits (no more than two litres), with consumers able to purchase from across any two product categories.

The voluntary measures have been put in place to prevent panic buying and excessive at-home drinking.

Julie Ryan, CEO of Retail Drinks Australia said: “We know that consumers like to feel certainty of supply during times of crisis, and our members want to do their part to encourage people to continue to purchase alcohol responsibly as they normally would.”

“Our suppliers in breweries, wineries, distilleries and the wholesale and distribution of drinks continue to be fully operational and this means there are no issues of supply.

“However, it was clear that uncertainty on the impact of supply following the closure of pubs, clubs and restaurants last week caused some people to purchase differently.”

The buying limits do not apply to Western Australia, with the western state subject to even harsher restrictions.

Bottle stores have been named an essential service by the Federal Government and will remain open for the time being.
