It's the big cry we all needed to have.
In last night’s episode, Ben and Andy say goodbye in what turns out to be the most heart-wrenching break-up scene since Sophie left Jarrod on the beach in the Bachelorette finale.
By now, the producers are running short of ideas for elimination challenges so they decide to make a pantry out of Jock, Andy and Melissa’s breakfast ingredients. Nice save, intern.
Reynold, who shall henceforth be known as the Dessert Robot, gets to work on a chocolate ganache with coffee-steeped ice cream, burnt-vanilla meringue, lemon jam, brown butter walnut crumble and frozen crème fraîche, and it’s safe to say he’s not going home. Ever.

We’re assuming Rose is unaware that both Poh and Reynold are making desserts because she decides to make one, too.
Hayden puts together a chilli verde with jalapeños crema and a jalapeño and peach hot sauce which he serves with a couple of beers. He uses corn chips from the pantry and is immediately taken down for it. “You should try making your own next time,” says Andy. He takes it better than we would have.
Big Ben Ungermann (we’re pretty sure that’s his prison nickname, too) tries to redo his success with the chicken fat caramel with a pancetta caramel. However, it doesn’t seem quite so edgy the second time around. To make it a bit more controversial, Ben channels his 10-year-old self and fashions it into a phallus. It’s a ballsy move and the judges love it.

Reynold is given the highest score possible for his dessert, which is the joyous group hug. Reynold says he is going to put the dessert on the menu at KOI, so we check the website and keep refreshing the page every minute for the rest of the night.
Finally, the moment we have been dreading since Ben Milbourne first walked into the kitchen: the inevitable moment where Andy would have to send Ben home. And it’s a lot more like kicking a puppy than we had anticipated.
Ben plates up a barbecued salmon with a walnut and beurre noisette cream and a sauce vierge. Andy takes aim at his technique: “I can tell you are trying to do new things and get as much flavour in there as you can, and you have, but you just need to be sure that that technique is there to cook that fish perfectly.” If you look closely, you can actually pinpoint the exact moment Ben’s heart breaks in two. Jock says the tail end of the fish tastes like tinned salmon and for that he’s going home. “I came back for two reasons really,” Ben says as he is leaving the MasterChef kitchen. “I wanted to see if there was any way I could give back to this icon that’s given me so much… and also you,” he says, nodding at Andy, “to see what you are doing now, I’m so proud of you.” Australia then joins in for a big ugly cry in front of the television and it’s the emotional release we have needed since restrictions set in. Thanks for that, Ben.
Tune in tonight for a three-round team challenge cook-off.
