MasterChef recap: The Ultimate Barbecue Challenge turns out to be a banger

MasterChef S12 E6

Grilled banana presents the toughest challenge yet for Australia’s top chefs.

On last night’s episode of MasterChef, contestants were challenged with throwing a barbecue for 1200 at the beach without receiving a single infringement notice.

The judges outlined the rules. However, we didn’t actually hear them because we were too busy marvelling at Melissa’s fabulous hat.

Turns out, teams will need to create three barbecue dishes in two and a half hours, and how long does it take to throw a tray of snags on the grill?

The orange team gets the right idea with grilled prawns and salsa verde. They must hate Harry because they make him peel 400 raw prawns, despite the fact that he spent his childhood peeling prawns on his family’s prawn farm.

Meanwhile, on the purple team, they decide to plate up Latin American fiesta flavours. They work out that the barbecued corn is not salty enough, but rather than adding salt, they try lime mayonnaise instead.

Over on the yellow team, Chris is manning the meat stations. For some reason, they’ve trusted him with portion control again, and it’s a decision that they will soon come to regret.

The first real drama occurs when the orange team must grill a banana. They try throwing one in the smoker, but it doesn’t work. The task turns out to be extremely difficult, a bit like the snow egg challenge but with a banana.

The hat returns and it’s time to taste. Andy brings out all the adjectives, everything is ‘cracking’ and ‘banging’, and we’re just disappointed he didn’t say ‘pinging’ again.

The judges award first place to the orange team, who delivered ‘the perfect menu’, despite Andy telling them that they were playing it too simple just moments before.

Last place goes to the yellow team for their boring beef and uneven chicken portions. They will head into a pressure test tonight, where one will leave the MasterChef kitchen forever, or at least until the next All-Stars or Back to Win special.
