Did the judges make the right call?

Welcome to week two. We know MasterChef is probably the most constant thing in your life right now, so if you miss an episode, don’t panic! Read on and we’ll catch you up.

Tonight’s elimination challenge saw the yellow team cook against each other in an Orana pressure test. Contestants were asked to recreate three of the fine diner’s most famous dishes. Essentially, it’s a grand finale challenge in week two.

And that’s not all. Jock makes the ‘explosive’ reveal that there will be two rounds to the pressure test. Everyone will cook in round one, while the three contestants with the least impressive dishes will cook again in round two.

The contestants will need to recreate his scarlett prawns with boab, bunyan nut chawanmushi and riberry crumpets with sugarbag honey and whipped butter. If you thought it was hard to get your hands on flour right now, just try finding boab. And if you do find it, please don’t stockpile it. We don’t want a boab shortage.

Everyone looks pretty terrified at the thought of recreating Orana’s top dishes, except for Laura who has literally done this a million times before.

The contestants start by whipping up their crumpets. Ben flips his crumpets too early the first time and then burns them the second time, he then goes on to undercook his prawns. It’s safe to say he’s in the bottom three.

Reece and Courtney forget to remove the prawn’s intestinal tract, and no one wants to eat a poo chute, which means they join Ben in round two.

Meanwhile, the judges get to taste the crumpets eight times and that is just not fair.

The Orana pressure test continues with two more Orana dishes, burrata foam with kohlrabi cones and damper with lamb butter.

The second cook is a lot more manic than the first, culminating in a tea towel fire.  Jock can see that Courtney is struggling. “Just follow your instincts,” he says, and he’s right. Just cook the xanthan as you would at home.

Reece pulls it together in round two with a much calmer cook, and his food is deemed Orana-ready by the judges.

Ben, however, experiences some serious siphon issues in the final seconds, which compromises the texture of his burrata foam.

Courtney runs out of time and doesn’t manage to dress her kohlrabi cones – don’t you hate it when that happens? While her lamb butter and burrata are deemed best in the comp, she is still missing an element, and for that, she’s sent home.

Kohlrobbed we say! Oh well, at least there’s wine and Fleetwood Mac waiting for her back in Sydney.

Tune in tomorrow night for the first mystery box of the series, where Ben makes chicken feet caramel. Now how could you miss that?
