Fight! Fight! Fight!
We know MasterChef is probably the most constant thing in your life right now, so if you miss an episode, don’t panic! Our recaps are here to catch you up.
What is supposed to be a mystery box challenge quickly descends into a broth-off, with Jock forcing Brendan and Khanh into a soup showdown, possibly to the death.
But first, let’s backtrack a little. Melissa has put together the first mystery box of the season, and it’s a good one too. She’s packed it with a few of her favourite ingredients, from cherries to coriander, manuka honey, black vinegar, Chinese five-spice, taro, King George whiting, spring onions and galangal.

Jock quickly discovers that two contestants are making a broth and he’s as giddy as a schoolgirl. “It’s a broth-off, brothers,” he says, hopping from foot to foot with glee. He then goes around telling everyone about it, and we’re pretty sure he’s taking bets.

When it comes time to taste, Jock brings Brendan and Khanh down together, and it feels as though he could start chanting “fight, fight, fight” at any moment.
Khanh steps into the ring first. His chicken feet broth is deemed to have amazing depth of flavour. “I’m looking at that and thinking, could I do that in 70 minutes? Probably not,” Jock says.
Meanwhile, Brendan is sweating enough to create a whole other broth. The judges try his bowl and it’s good, but just not quite as punchy as Khanh’s. “Your grandmother would be proud,” says Melissa – but would she though? Or would she have wanted him to win the broth-off?

Cut to yet another ad break on The Secrets She Keeps. If you don’t know the dialogue off by heart by now, then you haven’t been watching enough MasterChef.
Meanwhile, Ben puts his best foot forward with a honey and galangal ice cream with a chicken feet caramel, and it’s not nearly as horrifying as the ads made it sound.
We then get to the part of the night where we start searching for chicken feet on Deliveroo.
Reynold goes savoury again, and he decides to make King George whiting with a smoked butter emulsion and a five-spice honey sauce. It’s clear he’s eager to break away from his reputation as Australia’s most talented dessert chef, which has burdened him for so long. The judges absolutely love his dish. “Don’t even worry about cooking sweets anymore,” says Andy – and he does not speak for all of us.

Like every episode thus far, pretty much everyone gets it right. Laura’s King George whiting with spring onions and black vinegar is called “as close to perfection as you’re going to get”, while Sarah’s deep-fried taro dumplings are “just plain delicious”. Simon’s chicken feet jelly-turned-mousse is the single exception. It’s god awful and even we could have told you that from our couch. He gets a participation certificate for giving it a go.
The five best dishes of the day go to Ben U, Reynold, Sarah T, Khanh and Laura. Tune in tonight when they compete for immunity.
