Jock pulls the old switcheroo in tricky tart challenge

Jock Zonfrillo

Just look at that evil expression.

Tonight’s pressure test is all about cooking outside of your comfort zone, the MasterChef judges announce.

“A great pressure test needs to be set by a great chef who knows just how far to push you,” Mel says while introducing the free talent for this evening, MasterChef judge Jock Zonfrillo.

MasterChef cloches

Jock explains that there are two dishes to choose from, a savoury curried yabby tart and a choc Caramilk tart. Each contestant must stand behind the dish that they would like to cook tonight.

Conor says: “This is awesome. I get to choose my own dish today, which is huge, because in a pressure test, you never get that opportunity. I’m hoping I get to play to my strengths today!” In what turns out to be some really great foreshadowing.

And pretty much as soon as he stops talking, Jock SWITCHES THE PLATES. Meaning, those who chose the savoury tart are now cooking a sweet tart and vice versa. It’s so mean! It’s so evil! It’s so cruel! And we are here for it!

With two-and-a-half hours to replicate Jock’s tart, the contestant who least impresses will be going home.

Conor and Therese start on the curry tart, while Sabina, Kishwar, Maja, and Eric get to work on the Caramilk.

Conor is preparing the yabbies and cannot work out which is the coral and which is the gut sack, and that’s a word we never want to hear ever again.

Meanwhile, on the sweet side of the kitchen, the contestants are struggling to temper their chocolate, which only comes up in every single season of MasterChef.

And it turns out, there’s a second twist. The sweet tart must be cooked in an ungreased tart tin, rather than a silicone mould.

As a result, the contestants undertaking the sweet tart are having some serious problems releasing their tempered chocolate from its aluminium prison. This is a make or break moment, literally.

Eric MasterChef

Eric finally gets his free and he shrieks in some kind of cathartic chocolate-releasing ecstasy and it’s a very personal moment.

Meanwhile, Kishwar, Maja and Sabina are frantically slamming their tart tins against the bench and this is not the kind of anxiety we signed up for tonight.

Jock’s tart was meant to take everyone outside of their comfort zones but has he gone too far? Kishwar is crying, Jock. Look at what you’ve done.

Kishmir

Time is up and Kishwar, Maja and Sabina are forced to serve a “rustic”, “deconstructed” version of Jock’s tart.

Conor, Therese and Eric manage to get their tarts on the plate, so they make it through to the next round.

Out of the three broken tarts, Maja’s has a burnt crumb and her caramel is too sweet, which means it’s time to say goodbye.
