It's now their third second chance.
Another day, another opportunity for eliminated MasterChef contestants to find a way back into the competition.
Basically, you could have cooked two really terrible dishes in a row by now, and still make it back onto the show. Even Trent could get back in. That’s where we’re at.
For today’s challenge, contestants can choose whether they want to make ice cream from what’s under a clear mystery box (do we need the box?) or what’s under the covered box.
Three contestants choose the clear box, which contains Moreton Bay bugs, fennel, walnuts and jicama, while seven go for the covered box, which turns out to be even better, containing duck marylands, pomegranate, macadamias, prawns, chives, goats yoghurt, parsnip and black garlic. It’s the old “not-actually-a-stitch-up” stitch-up.
Katrina has deep regrets. All she can come up with is pickled eggs, so pickled eggs it is.

Black garlic doesn’t stop Trent from making ice cream. In fact, we think it would be really nice with the onion ice cream from episode eight.
Garlic ice cream is just pushing it. I draw the line at Cucumber. #MasterChefAU

Over at Tom’s bench, he’s making canelés, which are only the most delicious French cakes in existence. Not even black garlic can ruin these delightful little gateaux, which he pairs with pomegranate ripple ice cream, which we’re going to allow this time.
Nothing summarises #MasterChefAU better than the gantry whooping at Toms tiny cakes like he just dropped Eminem’s verse from 8 mile #MasterChefAU

Unsurprisingly, Therese is also jumping on the ice cream train, and today she’s making it from macadamia, which she’s pairing with a brown butter and macadamia nut crumble and a duck fat caramel.
In the end, she grinds the nuts too fine and the ice cream turns out grainy. She’s forced to serve a bowl of crumbs and caramel without the main element, and we get the feeling that if she had a second immunity pin she probably wouldn’t play it now either.

Wynona makes the fatal mistake of overcooking her duck. With just 15 minutes left on the clock, she changes up her proteins and decides to go with pomegranate-glazed prawns instead.
Let’s spare a thought for all of the ducks that gave their lives to be thrown out tonight on #MasterChefAU.

We hope Yo Yo didn’t travel far for Second Chance week because once again, the producers have not given her any airtime at all. At the very least, give us a closer look at that fab pink shirt.
GIVE US MORE YOYO. LIKE ANY YOYO. #masterchefau

The four best dishes from today will be given a fourth-second chance to re-enter the competition tomorrow, with the judges announcing those contestants to be Maya, Eric, Tom and Wynona.
The remaining six contestants will need to come to terms with the fact that they are probably not going to win MasterChef, I mean, it’s very unlikely at this point but never say never. Join us tomorrow night when Maya, Eric, Tom and Wynona battle it out for the final white apron.
