Pete brings home the bacon in MasterChef's Heston Blumenthal challenge

MasterChef

Bacon on bacon? There's no beating that.

Tonight’s guest is the master of molecular gastronomy himself, Heston Blumenthal, who has kindly pre-recorded a message for today’s elimination challenge.

Only he didn’t film it as a full body shot, as specifically requested by the production team, so they’ve had to stack of bunch of televisions on top of each other.

Heston challenges the contestants to turn breakfast into dessert – and it’s not much of a challenge to anyone who has ever eaten a late-night bowl of Frosties before.

The contestants choose a screen from the display, with each revealing a popular breakfast ingredient. Contestants have 75 minutes to turn that ingredient into a dessert, with the best entrant winning immunity from Sunday’s elimination.

“Be creative,” is Heston’s advice to the contestants, which everyone ignores and makes ice cream instead.

Yes, even Vegemite ice cream, which is looking surprisingly delicious after last night’s onion ice cream.

Meanwhile, Linda is using tea to make an earl grey tea ice cream and what a surprise, Jock hates earl grey tea. Add it to the list.

Aaron gets Cornflakes, which he uses to create a Crunchy Nut dessert inspired by the last mouthful in the bowl, which is, quite frankly, the worst part, unless you like warm milk and soggy cereal.

Heston encourages the contestants to do something different with this challenge, something they wouldn’t usually do at home, so Pete sets fire to the microwave (or micro-wah-vay, however you pronounce it).

But he’s not worried, his special ingredient is bacon, which means, he’s pretty much won already.

Pete doubles down on his advantage, serving bacon ice cream with bacon crumb and potato chips, and there’s no beating that.

Not even Depinder’s extremely clever and well-executed avocado dessert, which is literally sculpted into the shape of sliced avo, can compete.

Heston says a quick ‘see ya later’, so I guess that’s it.

Tune in on Sunday night for the second elimination of the series, which will be set by “superstars” Reynold Poernomo, Callum Hann and Poh Ling Yeow.
