Eat Out

You can now buy the premium plant-based meat favoured by Heston Blumenthal from Woolworths

The mock meat has even made it on to Michelin starred menus.

From soybean to coconut, potato and pea protein, vegetables are hedging in on the meat section of the supermarket.

The latest mock meat to land on shelves is Fable, a premium plant-based meat made from shiitake mushrooms.

Replicating the umami-rich flavour and texture of braised meat, Fable is designed to be used in place of pulled pork or beef brisket, in dishes like tacos, braises and ragu.

In contrast to some of the other faux meat products  on the market, Fable uses just a handful of ingredients – with shiitake mushrooms making up 65%  – and is minimally processed.

The product was developed by former fine dining chef and mycologist Jim Fuller with organic mushroom farmer Chris McLoghlin and former Shoes of Prey co-founder, Michael Fox.

Fable is also a favourite of renowned chef Heston Blumenthal and has even featured on the menu at many of his restaurants, including The Fat Duck in London. “Leveraging the natural benefits of shiitake mushrooms, Fable goes beyond replacing meat, it should be in a category of its own,” Heston Blumenthal said.

Australians can now buy Fable Braised Beef with the refrigerated meat alternatives, near the meat section of their local Woolworths. It’s priced at $8.50 for a 250g pack.
