Sorry nan, but there’s no need to bring your plum pudding this year. We’re putting the ice cream experts from Gelato Messina on dessert duty instead.

This year, they’ll be whipping up a rocky road trifle, to cap off what has been an extremely rocky year. The special dessert will feature six layers of lusciousness, starting with cherry flummery, topped with rocky road crunch, coconut chiboust, chocolate mud cake and milk chocolate gelato, finished with caramelised peanuts, marshmallows and glacé cherries on top.

Served in a glass bowl, the trifle comes with a one-litre bottle of Messina brandy custard and a cooler bag, so you can safely transport it to your family picnic and then take the leftovers home with you – because there’s no way you’ve leaving them behind. This year, you’ll also get a 750g Sonoma x Messina Dulce De Leche Sourdough Panettone to eat later in the day when you’ve recovered from the first round of desserts.

Each trifle feeds 20-30 people and will set you back a cool $200. Despite the hefty price tag, the dessert pack sells out every year so if you want to get your hands on one, we suggest signing up for the pre-sale.
