Holy guacamole! Avozillas hit Australia

Monster avos have landed at fruit stalls across the country.

It’s a bruncher’s dream come true – an 1.8 kg avocado that’s as big as a human head.

The cultivar is a cross between two subspecies of avocado, a West Indian and Guatemalan variety, and despite its monster size, it’s not actually genetically modified.

The variety was first discovered in South Africa and is now grown in Bungundarra in Central Queensland by the country’s only grower, Groves Grown Tropical Fruit.

Clocking in at five times the size of a regular avocado and ten times the weight, avozillas may be big but there’s no compromise on flavour – they’re said to be just as tasty as their regular-sized buddies. They are also said to have a slightly creamier texture which makes them easier to spread.

The first of the season’s crop has just dropped around the country, and they’ve already been spotted in fruit stalls around Perth, as well as Adelaide’s Central Market. Sydney can also expect a shipment soon, with the harvest limited to these three cities.

There’s plenty you can do with the mega fruit. You could make a monster mash, either on sourdough with salt and lemon, or as a guacamole, with one smashed avozilla able to feed around 20 party guests.

Prices for the fruit are set to vary, with the Adelaide Central Markets selling theirs for $23 each.  All we ask is that you pick very, very, carefully.
