Drinks at the pub are back on.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced that restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs in NSW would be permitted to seat 50 patrons from June 1.
The new limit represents a jump ahead from Scott Morrison’s previously announced three-step plan.
While it represents a significant leap forward for the hospitality industry, Gladys warned that dining will not go back to normal just yet.
Under the new restrictions, all diners would need to be seated and group bookings would be capped at 10 people.
Venues would have to allow four-square-metres of space per one patron, which would affect total capacity.
“There is no mingling, no standing around. There are strict guidelines in place, which will ensure that we can do this safely,” Ms Berejiklian said.
Deputy Premier John Barilaro said: “It’s our happy hour, time to wine and dine.
“We want to see people visiting the regions visiting hotels, pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes,” he added.
“Today’s announcement will allow regional businesses and economies to embrace, with the opening up of travel, the opportunity for businesses right into the June long weekend to fill their registers.”
The move comes just one week after restaurants and cafes were permitted to open to 10 patrons, however, many found it to be not financially viable.
NSW is soon to have the most relaxed social distancing restrictions in Australia, despite being the worst-affected state.
