The Melbourne chef has stepped in at the last minute to save the iconic venue.
Modern Thai restaurant Longrain, which had only just announced its permanent closure, has been saved at the last minute by renowned chef and restaurateur Scott Pickett.
When Pickett heard that the restaurant would be shuttering for good, The Estelle and Matilda 159 chef called its current owners, Lisa and John van Haandel, to discuss the possibility of a takeover.
“I have always loved Longrain, it’s a wonderful brand and venue, and I didn’t want to see that disappear. I am stoked that the team is staying on and we can continue this iconic Melbourne venue. Longrain 2.0 I call it,” Pickett said.
While Pickett will oversee the running of the restaurant, Arté Assavakavinvong, who has been with the venue for six years, will stay on as head chef. The front of house team will also remain unchanged.

The menu will continue to feature many of Longrain’s signature dishes, including its betel leaves with seared scallops, lamb Panang curry, and eggnets with pork belly and caramelised coconut, which will sit alongside a number of new inspired dishes.
Former Longrain owner Lisa van Haandel said: “John and I are thrilled to announce that Longrain will continue under Scott’s care. Having followed his successful career for years we have complete confidence that he will maintain the soul and legacy of this iconic business. We are delighted to see him embrace the wonderful Longrain team and believe he brings an energy that will see Longrain continue and grow. We pass the baton confident our baby is in good hands.”
Longrain is slated to reopen when the lockdown restrictions are lifted next month.
