Sydneysiders will soon be shouting "scrumdiddlyumptious" about a new pop-up based on the Roald Dahl classic.
With Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of The BFG hitting the big screen next week, a Sydney-based dessert bar is creating a “deliciously disgusting” pop-up restaurant. KOI Dessert Bar’s BFG-themed menu will give children – and probably a few children at heart– the chance to indulge their fantasies and promises to stimulate the senses.
MasterChef 2015 contestant Reynold Poernomo will transform the dessert bar into “Rotsome Restaurant,” where he plans to delight diners with a “Gobblefunk”-inspired menu. (“Gobblefunk” is the name of Roald Dahl’s personal language, the curious, mashed-up one he invented and that appears throughout his work.) But diners will have to get in quick, as the restaurant will exist for one day only and seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The imaginative three-course menu includes dishes such as the “snozzcumber,” which we assume will be somewhat more delectable than the “repulsant” vegetable Roald Dahl famously described. (“I squoggle it! I mispise it! I dispunge it!” the Big Friendly Giant cries at one point. “But because I is refusing to gobble up human beans like the other giants, I must spend my life guzzling up icky-poo snozzcumbers instead!”)

Operating between 1pm and 6pm on July 4, “Rotsome Restaurant” will be open to all “human beans,” though the entry policy has a catch: every giant is required to bring along a chidler – which is to say that adults must be accompanied by a child over six, for those of you who don’t understand giant-speak – in order to be granted access.
If you want to get your tastebuds tingling in anticipation of the pop-up event, catch one of the first screenings of the film, which is released in Australia on June 30. The BFG stars newcomer Ruby Barnhill as Sophie and Oscar-winner Mark Rylance as the titular giant.
