A bar in Fitzroy, Melbourne has become the first in the state to be fined for failing to comply with new coronavirus restrictions.
The unnamed bar was handed a $9,913 fine for continuing to serve food and drink to patrons.
Around 500 police officers are currently checking on businesses around the state to ensure they are complying with the latest government regulations.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton: “It’s the first time we’ve issued an infringement but it won’t be the last. I can assure you.
“We’ve been fairly lenient, we’ve issued a lot of warnings but I think now the time for that has passed.
“Unless you’ve been living under a rock or unless you’re an idiot, you’re quite clear that the restrictions are there … so we are going to be enforcing them from today.
“Police (will) use discretion but that’s going to be more the exception than the norm.”
Restaurants, cafes and bars are currently restricted from serving food and drink to dine-in customers. They can still offer takeaway and delivery.
