“Mi casa es su casa” isn’t something you’d expect to hear at a Japanese restaurant. But when the team behind Tokyo Bird and Osaka Trading Co opened Nikkei Bar & Restaurant in the former Bodega site in Surry Hills, they weren’t exactly painting by numbers.

The restaurant serves a border-blurring shared style of Japanese-Peruvian food; a cuisine which has been evolving since the late 1890s, when the Japanese first immigrated to Peru.

It’s the kind of menu where Hokkaido scallops with edamame are given tang thanks to a fresh capsicum salsa with chilli and lime, and you’re as likely to find avocado and sweet potato atop your tuna tartare, as ume koshu.
