It's the surprise twist we didn't see coming.
When a snack hits just right, it can be hard to shake it from your mind. The Korean doughnuts – or kkwabaegi – from Soul Deli are now living rent-free in our heads.
A twisted pastry with the nutty warmth of sesame seeds, dough that is reminiscent of a sweet milk bun rather than a batter-style doughnut, and the sticky rice syrup glaze that cracks like a brûlée, it’s hard to beat.

A final flourish of fluffy panela sugar adds an almost cinnamon-like quality and pulls the whole bite back from the edge of sweetness.
The kkwabaegi has been a childhood Korean favourite for years and while we may be a bit late to the party, we’re more than happy to make up for lost time. A popular street food, the Korean doughnut is familiar, but still a far cry from a western doughnut thanks to the addition of glutinous rice flour which gives it a really pleasant chewy texture.
So much satisfaction for just five bucks? Obsessed.
Soul Deli is located at 1/212 Riley Street, Surry Hills. For more details, head to
