Always put the delivery bag in the sink, rather than on the kitchen counter or table.

The chance of contracting coronavirus through food delivery is very low, and so far, there has been no recorded cases of food-borne transmission. Experts agree it is generally safe to order take-out if you follow the proper precautions.

Ask for contactless delivery

The biggest risk for infection comes through person-to-person contact. Thankfully, many of the major delivery services including Uber Eats and Deliveroo are already offering contactless delivery, however, if you are ordering direct from your local café or restaurant, make sure they know to avoid contact. Simply ask the courier to leave the meal on your doorstep or within the building’s lobby for collection. Always use an electric payment method, rather than cash.

Put the delivery bag in the sink

Coronavirus has been shown to live on plastic surfaces for up to 72 hours and cardboard for 24 hours. To avoid a possible transfer of the virus, place the delivery bag in the sink rather than your home surfaces, as the sink can be easily washed down after your meal.

Transfer takeaway to plate

To be safe, transfer your food from its plastic container to your own dinnerware using clean utensils. Don’t keep the leftovers in the original containers – even if they are going in the fridge – as it is so far unclear how the virus responds to heating and cooling.

Wash hands before consuming

After you have disposed of the packaging and before you eat, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, making sure you cover all parts of the hand.

Bon appétit!
