Pull on your bell-bottoms, the cool kids behind inner city dive bar, Ramblin’ Rascal Tavern, have launched a 70’s-inspired cocktail lounge set to a swingin’ soundtrack.

The new venue, which is being described as ‘porn chic’, has its own kissing booth with furry backdrop, as well as a collection of raunchy Playboy posters on the wall.

“It’s not as crass as it sounds, we’ve tried to keep it classy,” co-owner Charlie Lehmann says.

The interiors will take you back to the glory days of the 70s with its smooth, curved edges, timber pannelling and drab palette of mustard, maroon and brown. The furry wall, which is made from two metres of dark chocolate shag, makes for an eyebrow-raising feature.

“It looks pretty cool actually, I can just see people rubbing their faces against it now. We went for a dark colour because you just know it’s going to get filthy.”

As for the kissing booth, the idea was born from an awkward alcove that they just couldn’t work out what to do with.

“It only fits two people in there – maybe three, this is the 70s after all,” Lehmann says.

Rather than crowding the bar mosh-pit style, patrons will be able to scoot into one of the venue’s nine circular leather booths and put in an order with the waitstaff. There’ll also be oversized leather chairs at the bar, which are set to be the city’s most comfortable stools.

Head bartender Oliver Churcher has created a list of ten cocktails, which will see new twists on old favourites like the cosmopolitan. As for wines, Mike Bennie from P&V Liquor Merchants has put together a list which includes many different styles.

“There’ll be big bold Burgundy and interesting old fuddy-duddy shiraz and cab sav. We’ve also included some natural wines and weird stuff too – there’s not much like that around here so we wanted to kick off that scene for them.”

Beers will be of the tinned variety “no bottles, no taps, just cans,” Lehmann says, while snacks will be old school dinner party starters, like Cabanossi, cubed cheese and Jatz.

Double Deuces Lounge is slated to open in the next few weeks.
