Reclaim your Wednesday night with Gin & Jazz at Charlie Parker's

It's the perfect pairing.

The roaring 20’s was known for two things, gin and jazz. And the two are coming together for a fun-filled month at Charlie Parker’s.

The underground Paddington bar has always had the vibe of a gin-lair, which is why it’s the perfect venue to host Merivale’s Gin & Jazz: A Gin Season.

Every Wednesday night in February, Charlie Parker’s will be the setting for End Notes, a five-piece jazz collective, to do their thing.

They’ll play two sets between 8-10pm and each week will showcase a different genre; west coast cool, Harlem swing, Blues and Brazilian bossa nova.

Charlie Parker’s is located underneath fine diner, Fred’s, and like its upstairs neighbour it incorporates a chef’s approach to drink-making by utilising and reimagining seasonal produce. The mixologists have created a limited edition, gin-forward menu for February.

Cocktails include the pink gin and tonic with Malfy Original Gin, Strangelove No.8 tonic, Angostura bitters, the southside mixes Monkey 47, lemon, mint, sugar while a negroni is made with Beefeater London Dry Gin, Campari, Antica Formula Vermouth.

A dry martini mixes Ki No Bi Dry Gin, dry vermouth, lemon twist while the wet martini is all about Plymouth Gin, dry vermouth, stirred down, olives.

All that drinking works up an appetite. Luckily Fred’s chef Danielle Alvarez knows what we want to eat at a cocktail bar. Dishes include yellowfin tuna crostini with olive and pickled chilli, a tin of Angelachu anchovies with butter and toasted bread and steak tartare with pecorino, olive oil and lemon.

Southside
60ml Monkey 47
30ml fresh lime juice
15ml simple syrup
6 mint leaves

Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker, double strain into a coupette glass and garnish with fresh mint.

Oregano
45ml Plymouth
10ml verjus
2.5ml fresh lemon juice
90ml oregano & honey soda

Pour all ingredients into a tumbler, add cubed or spear ice and garnish with an oregano sprig.

Kiwi Vermouth
45ml Beefeater
20ml kiwi & kaffir lime leaf wine
2.5ml Benedictine

Stir all ingredients in a mixing glass, strain into a Nick and Nora glass, serve straight up and garnish a kaffir lime coin.
