Set your morning alarm, Humble bakery by Porteño has opened in Surry Hills

Humble bakery.

Prepare to be humbled.

Humble, the long-awaited bakery by the Porteño crew, has finally opened its doors in Surry Hills.

And if you were expecting a small, modest bakery stocked with just the staples – you’re in for a real treat. A flaky one, too.

Part bakery, part cafe, the handsome new venue slots in between Bastardo and Porteño, with an impressive selection of freshly baked breads, pastries, cakes and sandwiches for dine-in and takeaway.

From early in the morning, patrons can find a number of Italian/South American-inspired bakery treats, from jamon and cheese croissants to quince danishes and caramelised onion and chorizo snails. As midday approaches,  large slabs of crisp focaccia generously topped with ham, ricotta and green olive tapenade, and zucchini and capsicum are slid into the front display and promptly snapped up by the nearby office crowds.

For something more substantial, the lunch menu also includes sandwiches, filled with ham, gruyere and zucchini butter pickle, and eggplant parmigiana with fresh mozzarella, as well as fresh salad bowls served with bread or rice.

As for sweets, the line-up of house-baked cakes might include a beautifully burnished Basque cheesecake, a flan and apricot tart or an olive oil and fennel cake. There’s also an extremely eye-catching watermelon crostata, and, sorry, but there’s nothing humble about it. The seasonal sweet is made from a thick, buttery pastry crust, filled with whipped ricotta and crushed pistachios, and topped with a hot pink layer of obscenely good watermelon jelly.

Naturally, there’s bread too. Sourdough, focaccia, ciabatta and baguettes are stocked behind the counter, with new loaves coming out every few hours, so there’s always something fresh and hot – even in the afternoon.

Well, if this is what it means to eat humble pie, then we’ll definitely have another.
