When you’re done, paddle back for naturally fermented pizzas and wine on tap.
Three Blue Ducks will fly south this summer to launch their fifth cafe at Melbourne’s new man-made wave pool, URBNSURF.
The new two-hectare surfing lagoon will mark the first of its kind in the world, with the pool generating up to 1000 waves per hour, with the ocean-like waves stretching to heights of two metres.
Once you’re wiped out, you’ll be able to paddle back to the Three Blue Ducks where you can dry off in the sun and grab a much-needed feed.
“We’re beyond excited about this new venue and bringing our brand to Melbourne to showcase our passion for good and honest food. This partnership is close to our heart – after all, we are a bunch of guys who love good food, the ocean and surfing,” said Three Blue Ducks co-owner and chef, Darren Robertson.

Similar to the Sydney, Byron and Brisbane outposts, the cafe will serve ‘real food’ with a menu that’s unique to Melbourne and built around local producers and suppliers. Fire will be a focus for the cafe, with the kitchen set to have its own pizza oven, rotisserie and charcoal pit.
“We’re looking to do naturally fermented pizzas as well as ethically sourced rotisserie chooks and big joints of meat cooked over the coals. We’ll have lots of interesting proteins as well as fermented items and a lot of colour coming from fresh, local veg,” says Three Blue Ducks co-owner and chef, Mark LaBrooy.
The café will also have its own garden, where the surfer chefs will grow herbs and edibles, as well as compost kitchen waste.
The cafe will be fully-licensed, with beers, wines and kombucha on tap, as well as Single O coffee for those who come out early to catch a break. Seating will be both indoors and outdoors, with impressive views across the wave pool.
“Yep, we’ll definitely be jumping into the water at the end of each shift,” says LaBrooy. “Can’t wait.”
