The King Arthur team are no amateurs when it comes to serving up Brisbane brunches, being behind the equally adored Merriweather in South Brisbane. At their new establishment you’ll find the same focus on local, sustainable fare with hearty meals and salads aplenty. The cafe is also a kingdom of sweet treats – if you need proof you need only look at the abundance of cakes that ill its Instagram feed.

28 Logan Road, Woolloongabba www.facebook.com/pearl.cafe.brisbane One of the early additions to Woolloongabba’s revamped Logan Rd Dining Precinct was Pearl. The Bistro-style eatery is open from Tuesday through Sunday, from 7am till late. Allpress Espresso Coffee is partnered with a seasonal menu that falls towards the creative over the standard in breakfast options. If the fruit and nut toast (from cult breadhouse levain) with house made butter isn’t your cup of tea then perhaps the chai and coconut bircher with blood orange and rose petals will be. And while the breakfast is good, the sweet treats are well worthy of an additional mention. The accompanying providore full of pantry essentials and decadent cakes is a non-negotiable following a morning feed.

190 Petrie Terrace, Brisbane www.scoutcafe.com.au Perched in the petite Petrie Terrace is Scout. The breakfast specialist is open for the early birds from 7am in a space accentuated with an eclectic collection of furniture and bric-a-brac. Scout is run by two local ladies Susannah Whitehouse and Candy Smith who recently also welcomed a second venue – Jessie’s Girl – down the block. It’s no shock that Scout is a local favourite, with a menu that rotates every six weeks and coffee beans that come courtesy of Supreme in New Zealand.

77 Grey Street, South Brisbane www.gaugebrisbane.com.au Tucked into Fish Lane near the creative hub of GOMA and QPAC sits Gauge. A relatively recent addition to the Brisbane dining scene, the restaurant courtesy of Jerome Batten of Sourced Grocer fame serves up brunch from 7am to 3pm seven days a week. Sure you’ll find the likes of bagels and toast on the menu, but there’s a creative side to the venue that really impresses. Breakfast treats like coal grilled pineapple, labnah, and sweet pistachio dukkah, or a sourdough waffle, wattleseed custard, malt ice cream and rhubarb dish for starters. Specialty coffee from Marvell St Coffee Roaster in Byron Bay and cocktails (from 10am) are available to accompany.

Corner Potts and Stanley Streets, Woolloongabba www.pawpawcafe.com.au Pawpaw sits under the shadow of Brisbane’s cricket stadium The Gabba, but the eatery couldn’t be further from the greasy takeaway favoured at games. The restaurant’s roots are in Thai cuisine, which it churns out once the sun sets, but it is Pawpaw’s breakfast offerings that are truly strong. There is a range of hearty options with a focus on the healthy on the menu, with a particularly impressive array of classic dishes for the traditionalists.

Kettle & Tin 215 Given Terrace, Paddington www.kettleandtin.com.au Given Terrace is a haven for the cafe lover, and sitting right at its heart is Kettle & Tin. The casual eatery is open from morning through late and is housed in a quaint wooden Queenslander typical of the district (complete with picket fence). But that’s where the typical ends – the all-day menu includes breakfast offerings that range from a summer-spice bircher muesli to fried chicken and waffles. Suffice to say there’s something for everyone.

53 Mollison Street, West End www.thegunshopcafe.com The Gunshop Cafe is a Brisbane breakfast institution. The eclectic district of West End is a popular stretch of cafes, bars, pubs and eateries but The Gunshop still manages to stand out from the crowd, proving the quality of its cuisine. Open from 7am every day, the cafe focuses on utilising ingredients sourced directly from the famed local markets, as well as its own rooftop – where two beehives have been installed.

121 Merthyr Road, New Farm www.littleloco.com Considering New Farm’s outdoor facilities (namely the lavish park that sits smack bang in the middle), it’s no surprise that it’s cafes tend to be rather health-conscious. Little Loco lives up to this reputation, with a menu that overflows with paleo and vegetarian-favouring options, including plenty of breakfast bowls and cold pressed juices. But that’s not to say the dishes aren’t tasty. As for our pick you can’t go past the mushrooms partnered with hummus, pesto, dukkah, feta and eggs on toast.

Corner Store Cafe 113 Sylvan Road, Toowong www.cornerstorecafe.com As its architecture suggests, Corner Store Cafe wasn’t always a breakfast haven. The owners of the inner-west foodie spot transformed a derelict cottage into a suave new space in collaboration with locals architects Richard & Spence. The result is an oasis in the suburbs – one that comes equipped with a very popular dining patio that overlooks the cafe’s accompanying organic herb and vegetable garden. Open 7 days from 7am, Corner Store Cafe serves up the typical (and beloved) of breakfast and lunch fare, as well as a range of treats and pantry favourites courtesy of its accompanying providore.

14 Collingwood Street, Paddington www.naimrestaurant.com.au This Paddington cafe (formerly called Shouk) may have had a name change of late but its passion for Middle Eastern fare remains. Staples shakshuka and hummus kawarma mingle on the menu with items that merge together the exotic and the familiar – the fig, walnut and rhubarb waffles included. Now guests can also enjoy the option of a glass of bubbles with their breakfast, as the venue has just welcomed a liquor license from 10am, though coffee, tea, and an impressive range of smoothies also remain. Naim is also now in South Bank for southside residents to enjoy, with a second cafe from the group recently welcomed.
