This intimate market rolls into Hobart each Sunday morning, bringing with it the best of the region’s produce and goods. Currently, around 50 stalls are involved, with only producers from local shires and surrounding suburbs eligible for involvement. Varied produce from throughout the region is available, and producers are joined by the regular appearance of a breakfast bar run by a local charity, school or sporting organisation to raise funds for their cause. Open every day (except Christmas), the Sydney Fish Market is a go-to for the freshest fish in town, from oysters to prawns, mussels, crab, squid and octopus served straight from the ice-filled crate. Born in 2002, South Australia’s Willunga Farmers Market was the state’s first. Held every Saturday in Willunga Town Square, the morning festivities have become a regional hub for the community and visitors to gather and purchase fresh, seasonal produce from the McLaren Vale district. On the fourth Saturday of the month, conscientious shoppers gather in Spotswood to stock up on organic, biodynamic and higher welfare goods, with many buying in bulk. The market and its 60 stallholders pride themselves on their mantra for sustainable and ethically-sourced produce, which ranges from meat through to eggs and dairy, with plenty of good, clean fair food to eat on the day. A bustling marketplace by day and, come summer, a humming street food and live music space by night, the open-air Queen Vic has been operating since 1878. Jammed with food and wine stalls, donut vans and ‘designer’ clothing, it’s Australia’s closest reincarnation of London’s Borough Market. It might be famous for its dim sims, but South Melbourne Markets has plenty more crowd-pulling tricks up its sleeves. Held under a canopy of fig trees in the foothills of Mt Chincogan, this market has been in operation since 2010. With a focus on fresh produce, artisan producers and food-related products, the market now attracts more than 60 stalls each week (on Friday mornings) and has its own program of dedicated workshops and special events. A down-to-earth farmers market, where 100 percent of produce is grown and harvested within a 160km radius of the markets and sold by the producer themselves. Expect pantry staples from eggs, herbs, vegetables, fruit and honey through to homemade artisanal goods from breads and pastries to jams and preserves.
