Work lunches will never be the same.
No tables available? From this month, you’ll no longer need a booking to get into one of Adelaide’s hottest restaurants. Duncan Welgemoed has announced the launch of Africola Canteen, a casual eatery inspired by his award-winning diner, so you can eat peri peri chicken and turmeric butter cauliflower whenever the mood strikes you.
Opening on The Parade in Norwood, the new canteen will showcase the same fiery African flavours as Africola, with a focus on super fresh, produce-driven dishes for a quick bite or takeaway meal.
“People have been asking us to open a second restaurant for ages, so you can stop now, ‘cause that day is almost here,” Duncan Welgemoed said.
“This is the everyday Africola experience; think of Africola Canteen as Iggy Pop to Africola’s The Stooges, it’s as fun and delicious as the original but with a few twists to make it a place that stands on its own.”

The menu will feature Africola’s greatest hits as well as some new dishes from head chef Joel Tisato, development chef Imogen Czulowski and of course, Duncan Welgemoed himself.
No need to book online, customers can rock up for a green goddess chicken slaw on their lunch break, or take home a grain salad or roasted meat dish to scoff at home later.
“Africola Canteen is a chance for customers to drop in and quickly grab their Africola favourites to take home or enjoy with mates on the Parade,” Joel Tisato said.
“The menu leans into what makes the original restaurant so great – it caters for all dietary and lifestyle requirements – but unlike the original restaurant you don’t have to book weeks in advance.”
Make it a meal with a strong range of non-alcoholic drinks, including shrubs, organic sodas and kombucha. Plus, they’ll also be slinging sauces and condiments (yes, that includes the Mpumalanga Fire Sauce) for your Africola feast at home.
Africola Canteen will open at the end of July.
