Always wanted to cook with Dan Hong? Now's your chance

Two of Sydney's favourite chefs are hosting a one-off cooking event that's worth jotting down.

Western Sydney is home to some great culinary talent, but perhaps the district’s most famous residents are mother-son duo Dan and Angie Hong. The Merivale executive chef Dan and his mum have garnered a reputation for their talent in the kitchen – knowledge that they’ll now have a chance to impart on their fans in person.

Dan currently overlooks the menus at Sydney eateries Ms G’s, El Loco and Mr Wong. He is a beloved part of Sydney’s culinary scene, though his mum Angie may soon overtake him in the popularity stakes. As a restaurateur, Angie is the founder of Cabramatta landmark restaurant, Thanh Binh, and has garnered somewhat of a cult following by opening her home to strangers for a Monday night meal (just take a gander at #mondayhongdinners on Instagram).

Now fans will have a chance to see both Hongs in action when they take to the stage at the upcoming Parklands Food Fest in Western Sydney, which will celebrate the foodies of the region. The mother-and-son duo will share their knowledge of classic Vietnamese cooking, alongside some contemporary twists from Dan’s repertoire.

“I’m very excited to cook alongside my Mum at Food Fest and I can’t wait to show off my style of cooking. I’m a huge fan of Western Sydney where I first started cooking. It’s the first place I take visitors: to Cabramatta, Canley Vale or Fairfield for Lao, Vietnamese and other great Asian eating”, says Dan.

Angie will talk traditional cuisine, sharing her understanding of authentic recipes for classic spring rolls and her famous Vietnamese salad, using produce from Parklands farmers. “I’m very excited to working in the heart of Western Sydney once again and I look forward to using such super-fresh vegetables and herbs,” she says.

While the cooking demonstration from the duo will be a highlight of the event there will also be plenty of eating to be had. More than 50 food stalls will set up camp for the event, accompanied by fresh farm produce, live music, gardening workshops, and special dessert alley Sweet Spot.
